Nellie became a barber when that job was held almost exclusively by men. She began her career in 1913 when a shave was a dime and a haircut was 15 cents. Her career was launched when her father found himself without any help one day at his shop. So, she was entrusted with shaving some customers. Licenses weren't required then, but she later obtained one.
