SPIERS, Emmett F., 70, of McKenney, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Spiers Fleming; two brothers, Lawrence E. "Sonny" Spiers Jr. and wife, Mary, and David Allie Spiers and wife, Mildred; niece, Carol Fleming Webster; nephews, Keith Fleming, Lawrence Fleming, David Spiers Jr. and Gary Spiers; nine great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. Spiers was a computer programmer with the U.S. Census Bureau. During his 37 years there, he developed computer software that was critical to the capture of respondent data for multiple decennial censuses (1980, 1990, 2000). He developed libraries of routines for use by other developers that greatly expedited the creation of application software. Emmett was always a patient mentor to many junior programmers. When he was not making life easier for his co-workers, you could find him pitching in the Census softball league, bowling duck pins in the Census league and driving the ball down the fairway in the Census golf league. Emmett also enjoyed camping, hiking and watching waterfowl with his friends.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Owen Funeral Home, 303 S. Halifax Rd., Jarratt, Va. 23867. The funeral service will be held graveside at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2011, at Concord United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Concord United Methodist Church, c/o Alice Spiers, 25713 Courthouse Rd., Stony Creek, Va. 23882, or to Hospice of Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, Va. 23226.
