James was the son of Willis and Lady (Jones) Bonner.
James went to Paul Quinn College and then volunteered for service in WWI seeing combat duty in France. He continued his education at Alery University in France at the end of the war.

James Isaac is believed to have married 4 times over the years: Matilda Lewis, Amanda Hunter Titus, Ida Belle Packer, and Sarah Ann Epps. James and Sarah had two children, Lucille (who died early) and Clifton Napoleon.
