Charles William Allen, Sr., was born in 1816 in Freedom, Baltimore, Maryland (now in Carroll County, Maryland), to John Allan- best known as the guardian and de facto adoptive father of the essayist, editor, literary critic, poet, and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe- and one of Allan's many mistresses, who is unidentified presently. Charles Allen may never have known his father, but he did make a life for himself as a farmer, having married Eleanor Baker in 1839 and having had four children: John Thomas Allen (1840-1916), Charles William Allen, Jr. (1842-1916), Mary Jane Allen Rawlings (about 1846-1936), and Sarah Allen (1847-unknown). He passed away there at the age of 83 and his body was laid to rest beside that of his wife, whom he outlived by six years.
