Peter J. Zehren was born 23 Nov 1834 in Orscholz, Saarland, Germany to parents Anton (or Antonius) Zehren and Anna Maria (maiden name spelled in variants of Niederkorn). Other records show his birth between 1835 and 1837 in France or Germany. His brother was Nicholas Zehren. The 1900 census says he came to America in 1854. By 1876 he was living on Sargent Street in Philadelphia before moving to East Adams Street in Philadelphia by 1900.

Their eldest of 10 children, Sarah, was born Dec. 1863, so Peter presumably married Sarah Sponheimer before that. Their children were: Sarah K., Paul P., John, Anna (later Weinmann), Peter M. (or Peter N.), Margaretha A., Joseph John, Ignatius, Mary A. and Margaret Josephine (later West).

Sadly they lost two children at young ages. Their 3rd child, John, sadly died at age 16 when he was accidentally scalded while working at Almy's Mill. They also lost their 6th child, Margaretha, at 11 months old, to cholera.

Peter was a currier by occupation.
