Donald was born in Hart, Michigan. He graduated in 1950 from Parris Island MCRD and served during the Korea War from 1950 to 1953.
He renlisted in the Marines 11 April 1965, at Lansing, Michigan.
When Donald arrived in Vietnam 21 January 1968, he was assigned to H&S Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. GySgt Carnes died of fragmentation wounds to the head
from incoming enemy mortar fire, during Operation Kentucky, north of Phu Hgan and 6 kilometers northwest of the Dong Ha Airfield.
GySgt Carnes was married served his country for 18 years and was KIA #26,563.
He had been in Vietnam for 3 months and 10 days.
He was 1 of 16 Marines killed in combat and was awarded the Silver Star for bravely during combat.
Survived by his wife, Rossie Strickland Carnes, and four children; Linda D, Teresa C Raymond S and Donald L Jr of 808 Bark Street, Jacksonville, North Carolina, and his mother; Florence Elizabeth Carnes of 5201 S Washington Avenue, Lansing, Michigan.
His father: Homer Jason Carnes was deceased.
His daughter: Sherry Lynn Carnes died 28 August 1967 and she was buried in the Onslow Memorial Park.
