Eugenia Susanna (Hattaway) Bishop, 99, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 7, 2011. Eugenia "Jean" was a radiant Christian and a loving example to her family, church, and friends.

Jean was born to Clifford A. Hattaway and Ada (Brown) Hattaway on February 15, 1912, in Millen, GA. She was married to Robert Lee Bishop, May 7, 1933, who preceded her death going to be with the Lord on December 6, 1979. Her sister, Dorothy Lanning; and brothers, Arthur, Clifton, James, and Leon Hattaway, also preceded her in death. Having no children of her own, she is survived by a close family of nieces and nephews.

Jean attended Spartanburg High School and continued to advance her education at Spartanburg Methodist College. In 1929, while attending college, she began working for Southern Bell Telephone Company. This began her career of 48 years with Southern Bell, where she held the position of Manager of Operational Services in Aiken, Greenville, and lastly in Spartanburg where she retired in 1977 at the age of 65. Mrs. Bishop was a member, and past president, of many organizations including the Zonta Club of Greenville, the Business Professional Organization in Aiken, and the Southern Bell Pioneers Club.

Through a loving church family and a dedication to Christian stewardship, Jean shared her passion for helping those in need. Upon retiring, her servant's heart and compassion for others was shared at Mary Black Memorial Hospital as a volunteer for 21 years. During this time she brought joy to the patients, visitors, and staff. Jean was honored by receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Friends were invited to a visitation with the family, 12:00-1:30 PM Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Providence Presbyterian Church. Funeral services followed at 2:00 PM, in the sanctuary, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Daniel C. Coleman. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, Jean expressed her desire for memorial gifts in her memory to be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, where she was a devoted member for many years.
