The son of Aaron and Elizabeth (Harris) Hathaway.

Charles was a 20 year old Farmer from Freetown, MA, when he enlisted and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 12, 1862 as a Private in Co. F. He was engaged with the regiment in the 1862 battle at Fredericksburg and in the 1863 battles at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Rappahannock Station. He was further engaged with the regiment in the Campaign against Richmond from May 1, 1864. He was subsequently transferred to Co. F, 32nd Mass. Infantry, Co. F and mustered out of military service with the 32nd Mass. on June 29, 1865.

Following his military service Charles resided in Freetown, where he worked as a farmer, fisherman and from 1870 as a Stonecutter.

Charles was 29 when he married Mary Jane Haskill, age 18 and the daughter of William and Mary A., at Taunton, MA on Nov. 16, 1871. There were no children born to the marriage.

Charles was a member of the Richard Borden, G.A.R. Post No. 46, Fall River, MA. He received an Invalid pension from the government due to disability from asthma. He was 64 when he died of Consumption (Tuberculosis) at Freetown.
