PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES AWAY
W.H. Bachtell Succumbs to Pneumonia on Monday After a Few Days Illness.

W.A. Bachtell, one of the most respected citizens of this city, passed away Monday evening at 6:30, at the family residence on Locust street, after an illness of only a few days with pneumonia.

The news of his sudden death came as a shock to the citizens of this community, as only last Friday he was on the street and from all appearances was in his usual good health. Friday evening, however, he took to his bed with a bad cold which rapidly developed into a severe case of pneumonia. Everything possible, known to medical science, was done for his relief, but without avail.

In the death of Mr. Bachtell we lose one of our beat citizens, who during his life was respected and loved by all, a man who had acceptably filled the position of city councilman term after term and who, had he accepted the nomination, would have occupied the important position of Mayor of our city, a man who occupied many positions of trust, and who had never broken faith with anyone, and in whose death the whole city mourns with the bereaved family.

William Henry Bachtell was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 10, 1846, where he resided with his parents until 11 years of age, when the family moved to Virginia, where he spent his early boyhood. June 1, 1881, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Fife, at Morgantown, West Virginia, who survives him. Mr. and Mrs. Bachtell spent their early married life at Volcano, West Virginia, where Mr. Bachtell was employed as an operator in the oil region. In 1883 the family moved to this city, where they have since made their home. At the age of 21 years, Mr. Bachtell joined the Masonic lodge and became a Knight Templar at the age of 30. In this city he has served as Master Mason of the local lodge several terms.

The funeral was held from the Methodist church this afternoon at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of the Centralia Masonic lodge. Rev. A.J. Joslyn officiating, the interment being in the Washington Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Bachtell leaves, besides his wife, two daughters, Miss Bertha and Miss Clara, both residents of this city, and a brother, Samuel R. Bachtell, a resident of Philadelphia. He was also a relative by marriage, to Mr. and Mrs. Benedict, of this city, Mrs. Bachtell and Mrs. Benedict being sisters.
