BOOK - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981 Chas and Mabel Schema. Charles and Mabel Durand Schema were married February 26, 1924. Mabel Louise was the daughter of George and Eleanor DuBeau Durand. She was born in Ross, ND. The Durands had moved there from Faribault in 1903; they left Ross in 1912 to settle in Bemidji where George cleared the land and established a homestead, and farmed the land which was just south of the city. Mabel was one of 10 children born to George and Eleanor Durand. Her 1 sister was Isabel Peterson Cahill (1899) and 8 brothers were Gilbert, (1900), Willard (1905, drowned in 1907), a second Willard (1909), Walter *1911), Donald (1913), Max (1916), Leo (1918), and Louis (1923) who was killed in a plane crash in 1956. Mabel returned to Faribault in 1920. He parents separated in 1931 and George moved to Minneapolis where he died in 1930. Her mother, Eleanor, returned to Faribault where she was employed as a cook for Father Foley; often she would go to this summer camp in Pequot Lakes. She died in January 1950. Charles was the son of Frank and Theresa Chott Schema; he was born and raised on a farm in Walcott Township. However, his parents were married in Chicago in 1882 at the Church of St. Procopino. At that time, the family name was spelled "Sima." Frank had 1 sister, "Anna (DeCoux) and 4 brothers, Anthony, Frank, John, and his twin brother, Ted. Charlie farmed the family farm besides being policeman at the Kitzman Barn Dances. He loved to play baseball and to play cards. They sold their farm in 1948 and moved to Faribault where Charlie worked for the Faribault Canning Company and Mabel made drapes for Patti's Draper Shoppe, when she wasn't looking after someone's children. Children played a big part in her life. She had been a midwife for many mothers who wished to have their babies at home and often cared for their children if they were unable to do so themselves. Charlie and Mabel had 3 children: Delores (1927), Mrs. Clarence Landherr of Rose Creek, ME; Eileen (1920) of Minneapolis; and Charles Jr. (1933) married to Marilyn Misgen of Faribault. There are 3 great-grandchildren. Charlie died in 1976; Mabel resides at Faribault Manor.
