Daughter of William and Mary Ann Hughes. She spent her early years in Mesquite. In 1933, after the death of her father the family picked up and moved to Hawthorne where Mary Ann's older brother Alvin Hughes lived. The family moved in with Alvin and his wife LaVerda until Mary Ann purchased the Blue and White Cabin Court which was located on 5th and C Streets in Hawthorne.
Nina and Joseph met in 1934 while Joseph was working at the Naval Ammunition Depot, they married in 1934.
