Mrs. Elizabeth Downing Passes Away
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the United Congregational church for Mrs. Elizabeth Downing, who passed away at her home Thursday following a lingering illness. Rev. David Bigelow officiated at the services and Mr. and Mrs. John R. Willmott sang: In the Garden, The Vacant Chair, and God Be With You, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Leander Mead. Serving as pallbearers were six grandsons, Melvin Handke, Franklin Bonnes, Gerald Lillie, Paul Downing, Lee Wilcox and Kenneth Pullis. Burial was in the Oto cemetery under the direction of Hudgel funeral home of Anthon with Tracy Handke assisting. Mrs. Marguerite Dawdy and Mrs. John Willmott had charge of the flowers.
Elizabeth Sophronia Livermore was born near Anthon April 25, 1869, to Ai and Ana (sic) Livermore. She resided in Woodbury county her entire life where she passed away December 15 at the age of 80 years, eight months and 20 days. She was united in marriage August 12, 1869 (sic) [should be 1889], to Josiah Franklin Downing who preceded her in death in 1940. To this union were born six daughters and seven sons. She was a charter member of the Daughters of the Union Veterans at Smithland, the Oto American Legion Auxiliary, Cemetery Society and the Birthday Club.
Surviving her are six daughters, Mrs. Edna Handke, Mrs. Edith Bonnes, and Mrs. Rozella Lillie of Oto, Mrs. Dora Hardman, Mrs. Ida Wilcox and Mrs. Elva Pullis of Sioux City; four sons, Gilbert and Ai of Oto, Phirman of Anthon and Howard of Smithland; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Butcher of Moville, Mrs. Lena Maddock and Mrs. Hulda Aldrich of Bonner's Ferry, Idaho; six brothers, Dan and Harland Livermore of Sioux City, Parley Livermore of Canby, Minn., Abe and Isaac of Anthon and Alfred of Oto; 58 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death besides her husband were three sons, Oliver, Osmond and Harland.
Relatives from a distance attending the last rites were her brother, Parley Livermore of Canby, Minn., and Mrs. Sophia Jensen of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Nellie Vetter of Washington, D. C., who made their home with their grandmother while attending Oto high school.
