George E. Black, Sr., age 96, died July 25, 1991 at a local nursing home following a brief illness. He was born May 10, 1895, the son of Charles Black and Nannie Wray. Survivers include his wife of 69 years, Bertha Turner Black; two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Mary Black, Fincastle; E. Cecil and Mary Black, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Josephine and John Williamson, Arlington, Va.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and two brothers, Alice Campbell, Roanoke; Gladys Elmore, New Castle; Lewis Black, Norfolk; Lester Black, Roanoke. He was a long time employee of men's clothing stores including Brotherhood Mercantile, Airheart-Kirk, Fox-Hunt-Loyd, and Thompson's Clothing Store until his retirement at the age of 88. Mr. Black was one of the original volunteers from Roanoke to serve in the Army Air Force in France during World War I. In addition to being a charter member of Grandin Court Baptist Church, he was one of the founders of the Roanoke Civitan Club, a member of American Legion #248, a member of the Commander's Club, a former member of the Elk's Club and had devoted many hours of service to the VA Voluntary Service Organization at the VA Medical Center in Salem.
