Malinda Irvin Downing was born in Logan Co., Illinois, on November 20, 1851, and moved to Iowa with her parents while very young. She grew to womanhood on a farm in Hamilton Co., Iowa, near Webster City, where on the 24th of September, 1876, she was united in marriage to Daniel Lantis. After a few years they moved to Woodbury County where she and her husband united with the Free Methodist church. She was the mother of 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. Her husband preceded her in death May 24, 1904, by a stroke of lightning. Her living children are Mrs. Louisa Webb and Wesley Lantis of Correctionville, Iowa, and Clyde Lantis of Spokane, Wash. One son and one daughter are dead. One brother, Frank Downing of Oto, Iowa, alone survives of the immediate family. There are also 8 living grandchildren, 19 living great grandchildren and 1 living great great grandchild besides other relatives and friends. Thus on December 6, 1932, has passed another of Correctionville's pioneers who came here in a covered wagon in 1882. She was 81 years and 16 days of age. Services were held at her home at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday December 8 and at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Church. Burial was made in the Correctionville Cemetery; Wilson's Funeral Service and Rev. J.S. Deedrick in charge.
