Joseph was born in Landau, Beresan, Odessa, South Russia. He arrived in the United States on 17 April 1907. He left Rugby, ND by train, traveling to Baltimore, Maryland to board a ship to return to Landau. It is thought that being he did not understand or speak English very well that he got off the train when he heard North Baltimore instead of Baltimore. He got a hotel room there and he was robbed and murdered, thrown from the hotel window. It was also thought that he must have known his assailant or otherwise he would not have let them in his room. By the time they had found someone that could understand him he had died. He left a wife and daughter in Russia and a brother Michael Zimmerman and a sister Apolonia Miller in Brazil, ND and other siblings in Russia.
