1938 graduate of Pawhuska High School where he was All State in Football. He attended the University of Oklahoma on an athletic scholarship and was an all conference offensive guard and defensive middle guard on the OU Football Team. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in the 17th round, 153rd pick in the 1943 NFL draft. His football career was put on hold due to World War II. He served in the Army Air Corp and he did 34 missions in the European Theatre, based in England, serving as a bombadier/gunner.

He married Billie Ruth Henson of Pawhuska in 1943 and after his discharge from the military, he joined the Chicago Cardinals for the 1945 season. He played both offense and defense. He played center, tackle, linebacker and defensive back. He was a member of the 1947 NFL Championship Team. He played for Chicago for four seasons and played one season with the New York Bulldogs, AAF League in 1949. He retired before the 1950 season, as the Bulldogs had dissolved after one season. He had been working for U.S. Steel in the wire rope division as a Sales Manager after his playing days. The Campbell's lived in Kansas, Illinois, Arizona and spent the majority of his working career in Odessa, Texas, where he and Billie Ruth raised their three sons. In 1970, he was transferred to Tulsa and remained there until his untimely death at age 52.

He was very proud of his three sons, all three graduated from college, Walter (Jug) from Harvard, Mike from Pan American University and Jon from West Texas State University.
