A son of Albion's first settlers, Paul Tenney & Eleanor (Thompson) Peabody, whose family came to "The Forks" of the Kalamazoo River (now Albion) in March, 1833. James married Amelia Pearl on October 25, 1853 whom he met in California. She died in 1900 in Albion. The couple had two sons, Orville Hazard Tenney Peabody, and Charles Edson Gay Peabody. James went to California at the age of 21 for the gold rush there, and drove a team of horses the entire distance across the plains and mountains. There he made a small fortune which he lived on for the rest of his life. He moved back to Albion, and his home was located on the NE corner of N. Clinton and W. Mulberry Sts. He still had around $40,000 in his estate at the time of his death.
