Dr. Charles F. Stockwell was the first principal of the Wesleyan Seminary at Albion from 1843 to 1845, which later became Albion College. He arrived there in 1843 at the age of 26. He resigned as principal of the young institution after the Trustees failed to pay him his salary due to financial problems. Stockwell subsequently became a lawyer and practiced in nearby Jackson. He was part of the California Gold Rush in 1850, and left for California via a ship from New York to the Isthmus of Panama. There he contracted a blood disease "erysipelas" while treking through the jungles. He died on Sunday morning, June 25, 1850 at sea aboard the schooner Kirkwood on its way to California from Panama. He was buried at sea. The Stockwell Memorial Library at Albion College is named in his memory and his wife, Louisa Peabody (1819-1904). He married her July 18, 1844. She was the daughter of Albion's first settler, Paul Tenney Peabody. The Stockwell's daughter Madelon (Stockwell) Turner was the first woman admitted to the University of Michigan.
