United States Marine Corps Officer. He was the First Commandant of the reconstituted Marine Corps, appointed by President John Adams on July 12, 1798 and serving until March 6, 1804. His son, Lieutenant William Burrows, served aboard the brig "USS Enterprise" and was killed in a sea battle with the British brig "HMS Boxer," along with it's Captain, Samuel Blyth.
