Robert Y. “Bob” Thornton was born in Portland, Oregon in 1910. He graduated from Stanford University in 1932, attended University of Oregon and earned his law degree from George Washington University in 1937. He joined the Army in 1941, and graduated from it’s Japanese language school. After the war and law practice, he began his distinguished political career serving in the Oregon House of Representatives, seat 31, from 1951 to 1953. He was then elected Attorney General, serving four terms, from 1953 to 1969, and subsequently served as a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 1971 until retiring in 1983. After retirement he remained active in countless organizations, advocating for crime prevention legislation, and authoring the book “Preventing Crime in America and Japan.” In his 30 year political career he served in all three branches of government.
