James was married in Laurens County, Georgia to Mary Clementine Hobbs on July 9th 1856. He fought in the Civil War: Company C of Laurens County - 57th Georgia Regiment for the Confederate Army. James was killed on May 16th 1863 at the battle of Bakers Creek.

The men that were killed that day from the 57th Georgia Regiment were buried in unmarked graves between Bakers Creek and Vicksburg, Mississippi.

**James is not buried at Mt. Carmel but he does have a Military Memorial Headstone placed in his home church cemetery to honor him.
