Jerry Mailman Weight, 62, of Springville, died Nov. 26, 1987 at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center of a heart attack. She was born Nov. 7, 1925 in Rawlings, Wyo., to Harold and Cora Mailman. She was given the name Geraldine Emma Mailman at birth, but later changed her name to Jerry. She was the youngest of 3 daughters in the family, her sisters being Kay and Hazel which both preceded her in death. Her father was better known as "Scotty", as he had a thick Scottish brogue.
Jerry spent her first 13 years of life in a small town in Wyoming at Saratoga. As a child, Jerry suffered rheumatic fever for about 3 years and had to remain bed-ridden. Scotty, her father, was in government service which meant moving quite often. When she was 13, the family moved to Jackson Hole where they lived for 3 years. They then moved to McNarry, Arizona, which was way out on the Indian Reservation. Jerry wanted to finish high school, so she lived on her own in a boarding house in Phoenix, AZ, working hard to pay her way until graduation. After graduating high school, she got a job as a telephone operator in another small Arizona town.
Jerry's dad was then transferred to Springville, UT so Jerry also transferred to the Springville telephone office for Mountain Bell. She arrived with seniority and was soon in a management position. This is where she and Harry met and fell in love. They were married at Elko, NV on Nov. 26, 1947. She ws 22. She and Harry lived in Springville for about 10 years, where Harry served as a peace officer and drove truck. They had no children.
Jerry lovingly supported Harry in his work, no matter what it was, leaving good jobs each time he was transferred to a new area. They moved several times in the next few years while he worked as a sales representative for Kelly-Springfield Tire Co.
In Bellflower, CA, Jerry worked for general Telephone Co. thy were then transferred ti Sacramento, which was the only place they lived that Jerry didn't work. From there they went to Eugene, OR, where she was an inventory controller in a furniture warehouse. In Bakersfield Ca., she worked for Kern County as a switchboard operator. They lived in the Los Angeles area the longest. Jarry got tired of travelling, so he went to work for Montgomery Ward, managing the tire service center. Jerry became employed at Universal Studio switchboard and soon worked her way up to chief operator. She enjoyed her work there, as she met many interesting people from all walks of life, including many movie stars. She was revered by the Chairman of the Board. He valued her expertise and efficiency, askin for her to personally handle important transactions. She had contact with movie makers all over the world and handled the communications for the company on location everywhere. Jerry had a pleasant speaking voice in a business-like manner, and was always polite, which made her successful in her career. She had 17 years of service with Universal studios.
Jerry's health wasn't always good. She had asthma for several years and had to be taken to hospital emergency room several times. She was anxious for the move back to Utah to enjoy retirement, which as it turned out, wasn't able to happen due to her untimely death. She loved harry very much and contributed greatly to a successful 40 year marriage, down to the exact day of her death. She was proud to have reached that milestone, 40 years of marriage on Thanksgiving Day, being the same day she passed away.
We pay tribute to a great lady whom we all loved and will greatly miss.
