Obituary, The Columbia Daily Tribune, January 13, 1997:

John Arthur Deakins, 75, of Columbia died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Lenoir Healthcare Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Dripping Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Fred Erickson officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Dripping Springs Church.

Mr. Deakins was born May 20, 1921, in Yates Center, Kan., to John and Sarah Dale Deakins.

He married Phyllis Sailor on Dec. 14, 1946, in San Antonio, and she survives.

He served 22 years as an officer in the Army Medical Service Corps and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired at the rank of major and had been awarded several ribbons, plus the Bronze Star with oak leaf
cluster.

Survivors also include three sons, Dennis Deakins of Pensacola, Fla., and Kenneth Deakins and John Deakins, both of Columbia; a daughter, Linda Stratman of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Grant Deakins and James Deakins, both of Kansas; a sister, Edna Johnson of Kansas; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three sisters and two brothers.

Memorials are suggested to Dripping Springs Church, 2701 W. Dripping Springs Road, Columbia, Mo., 65202, or to the Central Missouri Humane Society, 616 Big Bear Blvd., Columbia, Mo., 65202.
