Jeanne Barbor, formerly of West Chester

Jeanne Barbor (nee Cowan), 81, died of Alzheimer's disease on November 27, 2011. A native of Chester, Jeanne was known for her sharp intelligence and lively sense of humor. She attended St. Robert's Elementary School and Notre Dame Catholic Girls' High School (now Katharine Drexel), where she excelled academically. She graduated from the Pierce School of Business Administration. She and her beloved husband of 52 years, Dick, lived in West Chester for 42 years, raising their family there. For the past 4 years, she and Dick, who predeceased her by just six weeks, lived at Maris Grove in Glen Mills. They were also part-time residents of Jensen Beach, Florida, where Jeanne was an avid beach-walker. A lover of the arts, Jeanne was an accomplished painter and piano player, a long-time Daylesford Abbey Choir member, and a voracious reader. She also loved tennis and gardening. When her children were young, she served as a volunteer with the West Chester Area School District and as a Girl Scout leader. Throughout her career, she worked as an executive secretary for a variety of corporations, including Scott Paper and MBB Helicopters. Her proudest accomplishment, though, was raising her four children. Besides her husband, she was also predeceased by her parents, Helen (nee Frame) and John J. Cowan and brother, John J. Cowan, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Helen Byrne of Miami; and her four children, Richard (Linda) Barbor of Elkton, Md., Dean Barbor of West Chester, Susan Barbor (Thomas Hampton Jr.) of Jupiter, Fla. and Carolyn Barbor (Michael) Zahaby of New York, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday December 2, with a funeral Mass to follow at 12 noon, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in West Chester. A luncheon will follow at 1:30 p.m.at the Cardinal Clubhouse at Maris Grove, Glen Mills. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research, alzinfo.org.
