James Lewis Walker, son of William S. and Virginia Lipes Walker, was born near Deer Ridge on December 27, 1852, and passed away near Deer Ridge on January 4, 1931, aged 78 years, 1 month and 8 days. He was united in marriage to Mary Daugherty in 1869, and to this union eight Children were born, five of whom survive viz: Clarence Walker, of Hamilton, Illinois; Mrs. Ida Holt, of Montana; Mrs. Bessie Thomas and Mrs. Mary Thomas, of Chicago, and Wesley Walker, of Knox County. Later he was united in marriage to Addie Kildew and to this union four children were born. One daughter, Minnis, preceded him. One son, Lewis, and two daughters, Mrs. Della Brewster and Mrs. Bertie Brown survive. Also, three brothers, Marion, George and Marvin and one sister, Mrs. Imogene Leavengood, and his companion, all of near this place.
The decedent had been in his usual health and was visiting in the home of his sister, Mrs. Imogen Leavengood, north of town, where a few days before his death he was stricken with pneumonia. All that medical skill and loving hands could do was done, but the death angel called, and he willingly obeyed the summons. He was garnered as a ripened sheaf and most all of his long earthly life was spent near this place. Funeral and interment was at Fairmont Friday afternoon, January 6, where a large concourse of friends gathered to show the last tribute of respect to one of our oldest citizens.
