Philena McKinniss was the daughter of Joseph and Louisa Shearer McKinniss. She was the second wife of James Mullineux, married 25 December 1848 in Jackson Co., Ohio.

Together they had three sons and two daughters:
- Joseph Henry
- Maria Louise
- Charles McCullough (m. Laura Gatewood)
- Frederick
- Mary Elizabeth

She is found in the following the US Federal Census records:
- 1830 for Clinton, Jackson Co., Ohio as part of her family with only her father listed by name
- 1840 for Clinton, Jackson Co., Ohio as part of her family with only her father listed by name
- 1850 for Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio with her spouse, four step-children, and their one daughter
- 1860 for Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio with her spouse, four step-children, and their three children
- 1870 for Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio with her spouse, his invalid daughter, and their five children and two domestic servants.
- 1880 for Gallipolis, Gallia Co. Ohio with her spouse, their five children and her son-in-law, Alonza S. Rathburn.

The 1850 and 1860 Federal Census supports that she helped to raise her husband's children by a former deceased wife, Maria Fowler. These children included his invalid daughter, Sarah.

Her obituary reads as follows:
"Death of Mrs. James Mullineux
In our last week we noted the serious illness of Mrs. James Mullineux. We regret to state she died on Monday evening, September 30, 1889. She had been confined to her bed for a month past, and suffered intensely, and her death was a happy release from pain. Mrs. Mullineux was married forty-one years since, and made a most excellent wife and mother. Her husband, three sons and two daughters survive her. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the family residence, Rev. R.H. Coulter, of the Presbyterian Church, officiating, with Messrs. Hayward & Son conducting the burial at the Old Cemetery."
