William Culler served in the Union Army during the Civil War in B. Co. 184th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on January 16, 1865 as a Private. He mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on September 20, 1865.

In the 1880 census, William and his family were living in Tuscarawas Township, Stark County, Ohio. He was listed as, William Culler, a farmer, age 43, born in Ohio, and his wife, Elizabeth Culler, age 50, born in Ohio, and their children listed were;Mary Culler age 20, Adam Culler age 18, Charles Culler age 16, Alice H. Culler age 14, and William Culler age 11, all born in Ohio.
