Mable was born as Ellen Dolan in Chicago, and placed in the Chicago Orphan Asylum on February 14, 1879. Mable became the adopted daughter of Joseph and Ann Burgess, of Hebron, Indiana, on August 3, 1880.

She graduated from Valparaiso University and taught school before her marriage. She taught children at the Bryant School south of Hebron, and also made the journey to the Arizona Territory where she was found in the 1900 Census with the occupation of school teacher.

Mable was also a songwriter. She wrote "Beyond a Lover's Call". The song was published by the Thompson Music Company in Chicago, and had an 1897 copyright on file at the Library of Congress.

She married Clair Rice on January 3, 1902 in Kankakee, Illinois.

Mable and her husband Clair had the following children: Burgess, James, Clair, John, Keaton, and Ruth.
