James Rocker Barrow, 75, of 284 Boondocks Road, Martinsville, died Monday, June 23, 2008, at his home.

He was a former commander of the Martinsville/Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, and he was a past coordinator of Toys for Tots.

Barrow served in the Marines during the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam, retiring after 23 years in the military.

He was involved in a number of veterans organizations, including Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Amvets and Disabled American Veterans, and was a past sergeant of arms of the Marine Corps League. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He was of the Christian faith.

Barrow was born in Henry County on Sept. 14, 1932, to Roy L. Barrow and Fannie Watkins Barrow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Maxine Birch Barrow; a son, James L. Barrow; and two sisters, Jean Hodge and Frances Wingfield.

Surviving are three daughters, Kay Hudson of Martinsville, Robin Cade of Mascot and Angel Roberts of Chesapeake; two sons, Jim Barrow of Wilmington, N.C., and Ed Acock of Martinsville; three sisters, Juanita Bowling of Martinsville, Helen Davis of Ridgeway and Naomi Crowe of Wirtz; a brother, Roy "Chester" Barrow of Martinsville; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services with the Rev. Lawrence Harris officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Thursday.
