Longview resident Patrick Eugene Madden, 66, passed away Nov. 27, 2011.

He was born March 1, 1945, in Hawthorne, Calif., to Howard and Mary Ann (Pilon) Madden. He moved with his family to Skamokawa in December 1950, attended Skamokawa Grade School and in 1964 graduated from Wahkiakum High School where, as a proud "Mule" he played on the state championship basketball and football teams.

He married Judy Nutter of Cathlamet July 25, 1966. She survives him at home.

Pat served as a member of the military police in the Army during the Vietnam War. Pat was a dedicated employee of Longview Fibre for 42 years, retiring in 2006. He actively coached soccer, baseball and softball for many years. Several of his softball players went on to successful college careers. Pat was an avid outdoorsman and spent many years hunting with his lifelong friends, Ken Brockway and Gary Emery.

He was preceded in death by his only brother, Howard.

He leaves behind four children, Erik (Rachelle) in Elk Grove, Calif., and Peter, Caesey and Kathleen, all in Longview. Being the grandfather of Gillian, Burke and Martie was his greatest delight. He is also survived by four sisters, Cathy (Bill) Harper of Camas, Wash., Betty (Larry) Johnson of Longview, Peggy (Mike) Alston of Louisville, Ky., and Penny (Darwin) Weathers of Central Point, Ore.; a brother-in-law, Lee (Darlene) Nutter of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Joan Barry of Longview, Cheryl (David) Nelson of Puget Island, and Merilee (Bill) Irving of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Cathlamet. Visitation is planned from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Dowling Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Fernhill Cemetery in Skamakawa.

May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face. May the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.
