CLEMMER, Inez (Higgins)
Inez Higgins Clemmer, 95, of Cleveland passed away Monday, May 15, 2000 in a local hospital. She was born at the Higgins family residence in Old Fort on March 6, 1905, one of eight children of Frederick Dyke and Martha Catherine Dunn Higgins, members of pioneer Polk County families. Her ancestor, Col. Frederick Hambright, fought at King's Mountain in the Revolutionary War. With her family, she later moved to Benton where she graduated from Polk County High School. She graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1926 and then began, in the secondary schools of Polk County, her long career as an educator. In 1936 Inez Higgins married Jacob Lee Clemmer, also a member of an old Polk County family. To them was born a daughter, Nancy, who died in infancy. She was also preceded in death by her husband in 1993.
The Clemmers moved to Cleveland in the late 1930s where Mrs. Clemmer taught mathematics and Latin at Bradley Central High School. In 1954 she became the assistant principal of the high school, retiring in 1969 with the gratitude and affection of the many students whose lives she had deeply influenced. In private life Mrs. Clemmer was well known as an avid reader and friend of the Cleveland Public Library. She was an equally avid and accomplished Bridge player until diminishing eyesight in her nineties compelled her to stop. She was a member and sometimes trustee of Broad Street United Methodist Church and of its Parks-Johnston Sunday School class, which provided her, even after retirement, an opportunity to teach.
She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law: Kenneth and Jane Blair Higgins of Athens; sister-in-law Florence (Mrs. Roy) Higgins of Meigs County and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews to whom she was devoted.
Funeral services were held May 18 at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Weikel and Dr. William "Bill" Johnson officiating. Interment in Benton Cemetery with Kent Smith, Alan Smith, Mike Christian, Fred Higgins, David Harris, Dr. Eddie Duncan and Dr. Bill Johnson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include the Parks-Johnston Sunday School class and the Monday Bridge Club. The family requests that memorial be sent to Broad Street United Methodist Church, 155 Central Ave, Cleveland TN 37311 or the Inez Clemmer Scholarship Fund, Bradley Central High School, 1000 S Lee Hwy, Cleveland TN 37311. Ralph Buckner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
