Ruth Wiggins Waldrop 99, of Ormond Beach passed away on March 20th, 2010.

Ruth was born March 30th, 1911 in May, Texas to Ernest Wiggins and Della Campbell Wiggins.

She was married to James Curtis Waldrop in June 1937, and they had two daughters.

She was educated at East Alabama University- Livingston, Alabama, University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and University California-Berkley. Ruth authored five children's books, and many professional books. She received many awards for outstanding Educational Leadership and Promotion of Children's Education. She also lobbied for Alabama and Federal Level for Education/ Libraries. She was a Charter Member of International Association of School Libraries. She was active life member of the Alabama Library Association and the American Library Association. She was Tapped by the Mortar Board-1994; was a member of Community Leaders & Noteworthy Americans (1973-74). Ruth was the owner of two companies Rusk, Inc and Independent Publishers Co. and was professor at the University of Alabama.

She received many honors which included, Pride of Valley (1965) - the Valley Sun, Homewood, AL, Who's Who in Alabama (1969) Vol. II, Who's Who among Women (1966) 4th Ed (1974), 8th Ed., LAMP- Library Association of S/E, FOUL Friends of the Library, Outstanding Educators in America: Who's Who in American Education in the 1970's, and World Who's Who of Women (Vol II).

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Rita Russell (David B.) and Kay Depel(William), grandchildren, Melanie Ann Russell, James Patrick Russell, Cary Allen Depel(Adela), Trent Adam Depel(Mary), Trena Lyn Depel. Eight Great- Grandchildren, Erica Raun Sanders, Hester Ruth Depel, William Henry Depel, Charles Samuel Depel, Tobias Roland Depel, Keeley Aria Depel, Aidan Tyler Depel, and Rily Elizabeth Russell.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, James Curtis Waldrop and by her grandson, David Bruce Russell, Jr.

In Lieu of flowers any donations may go to Ruth Waldrop Endowed Scholarship for School of Library and Informational Studies at the University of Alabama, 203 Rose Administration Bldg. Box 8700100, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0100, or www.us.edu or e-mail [email protected].

A Visitation will be held Thursday March 25th, 2010 at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Blvd from 4pm-6pm. Funeral Services will be held on Friday March 26th 2010 at 12noon in the chapel at Lohman Funeral Home.

Interment will immediately follow at Daytona Memorial Park Cemetery.
