Thomas Hearlson Nelms b.1853, was son of John Morris Nelms, b. 6 Mar 1817, in TN, d. 10 feb 1871, Danville, Yell Co, AR. His mother was Mary Susan McBride Nelms b. abt. 1831 TN, d. abt 1907, Yell Co. AR. She was daughter of William H. McBride b. 1807 KY, and Jane M. McKaughan b. abt. 1813 Pulaski Co. KY. Mary Susan McBride had ancestors from Ireland and Scotland. Mary Susan gave her grandmother's maiden name for her son's middle name. Her grandmother was Mary Harrelson b. abt. 1780 in VA. A similar ancestral name was Paul Harlson, 1650. Other descendant names include, Harold and Hearld.

Thomas Hearlson married Arthena or Arthenia Elizabeth McBride b. 12 Jan 1857, Waveland Yell co. AR, d. 14 Dec 1934, Waveland, Yell co. AR, daughter of Robert Franklin McBride and Margaret Lurinda McBride. The marriage was on November 08, 1872 in Waveland, AR. Dovie Mae Harvey's great grandfather, William Smith, Justice of the Peace in Yell County, Arkansas, performed the marriage ceremony for Thomas Hearlson (or Harrelson) Nelms and Arthena Elizabeth McBride. It is noted that he owned one of the first stores in Waveland, AR. He and his brother David Samuel went to Oklahoma to trade with Indians. His brother David had Indian wives(possibly Choctow or Seminole): Nancy Russel d. 1894 and he married her half-sister Millie Southard.
Texas descendants tell that Thomas Hearlson was a blacksmith. His son Nathaniel Lafayette, "Than" was a blacksmith in Texas, and "Than's" son Robert Hearlson was a mechanic.
