Caleb Joseph Lanz left for Heaven early on Sunday morning, November 20, 2011, following a valiant two and a half year battle with brain cancer. His favorite Bible verse was 2 Chronicles 15:7—"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your hard work will be rewarded." He is now enjoying that reward in heaven, with no more chemo, meds, wheelchairs, or pain.
Caleb was born on May 25, 1985, in Valentine, NE, the fourth child of Lavern and Pauline Lanz. He attended Lakeview Elementary and graduated from Todd County High School in 2003, where he led an active social life and participated in choir, National Honor Society, track, baseball, and especially football. He spent his summers coaching women's softball teams, playing softball and working at TC Summer Rec. Caleb graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 2006, where he majored in Human Services and continued his football career. During his college years he worked with developmentally disabled adults at LifeQuest in Mitchell. Following graduation, he moved to the Minneapolis area and was employed as a team leader at Rise, Inc., in the same line of work. His patience and caring personality made him a loved employee at his job and a great friend in life. He was active on volleyball and softball leagues with his siblings while in Minneapolis.
Caleb was preceded in death by grandparents, Otto and Bessie Leffler, Albert and Mildred Lanz; and aunt Sharon Lanz.
Survivors include parents Lavern and Pauline Lanz of Lakeview, brother Derek Lanz (wife Andrea Lanz) of Brooklyn Center, MN; sisters, Darby Lanz of Las Vegas, NV, and Lydia Lanz (fiancé Anton Brintley) of New Hope, MN. Of special note are "his" two girls, Kalie and Hannah Mechem. He was only in their life for a few short years, but they brought him incredible joy. Caleb is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, and numerous good friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine with Pastor Peter DeJong officiating. Pianist Jodi Arnold provided music and a special reading was given by Dean Noteboom. Pallbearers were Andrew Schmaltz, Bob Kornely, Kirk Byrd, Matthew Walkling, Andy Galloway, Derek Baechler, Marshal Tinant, Carl Hunger, and Lee Schneider. Committal services by Pastor Steve Boersma followed at Lakeview Catholic Cemetery in Lakeview, SD.
