John Schroeder Sr, a mason and bricklayer of Manitowoc, was killed Saturday around noon when struck by a Northwestern Railroad train. He had been working in the area during the week and as usual was returning home Saturday to spend Sunday with his family. He was walking on the tracks as he often did.
Because of a terrible snow storm with high winds, his head was swathed in a muffler; he didn't hear the train and the engineer didn't see him. Upon impact the train stopped, he was taken to the baggage car and tended by Dr. Connor of Cato, who was on the train, but death occurred in minutes.
The deceased was 58 and leaves a wife and 7 children.
