At age 18 he started teaching school in Croton, New York. On September 4, 1838 he married Eliza Jane Bronson, daughter of Orsemus Bronson and Lucy Thayer. Eliza was born around 1816 in New Milford, Connecticut and died on July 1, 1850 and is buried in Croton Union Cemetery. They had two children from this marriage. He was married a second time to Lydia H. Baldwin on March 4, 1851 by Reverend William Burnside.

Henry was in the mercantile business at Croton from 1844 to 1849. He served in the Anti-Rent War and the Civil War. He enlisted in Company D, 144th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, on August 29, 1862. He was discharged at Hilton Head, South Carolina on June 8, 1865. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Croton. He was an overseer of the poor for 12 years.
