Ex-resident dies in Florida hit-run crash
Herbert W. Schott, 51, of Riverview; Fla., formerly of South Bend, died about 11 p.m. Tuesday, apparently the victim of a hit-and-run accident near Riverview.
According to the Florida State Highway Patrol, Schott apparently was walking along U.S. 41 about a mile from Gibsonton, Fla., near Riverview, when he was struck by a vehicle.
Police said Schott was found dead by a passing motorist about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The cause of death was ruled accidental.
He was an employe of the Hartz Mountain Pet Food Co.
He was born on March 24, 1926, in South Bend and moved to Florida four years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Amy and Kathleen, and a son, Ross, all of Mishawaka; two sisters, Mrs. June Batz and Mrs. JoAnn Schindledecker, both of South Bend; a stepsister, Mrs. Donna Hendricks of Plymouth; a stepbrother, Fred Wolff of Plymouth, and his mother, Mrs. Ethel Wolff of South Bend.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 336 N. Main, where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, with Rev. John M. Bracke, associate pastor of Zion United Church of Christ, officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

A native of South Bend, Indiana, he had lived in this area for 4 years.
A truck driver for Tampa Livestock, he was a member of International Independent Showmen's Club.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Ethel Wolff, South Bend, Ind.; son, Ross Schott; 2 daughters, Catherine and Amy Schott; 2 sisters, Mrs. Robert Batz, and Mrs. Joann Shindledecker; and 2 grandchildren, all of Indiana.
Mr. Schott will be sent to the Orvis Palmer Funeral Home in South Bend, Indiana for services and interment.
