Samuel W. McKittrick was born in County Down, Northern Ireland to William McKittrick and Margaret Quarrel. In May 1859 he immigrated to the United States with his parents and siblings.

In 1873 he married Sarah Ellis "Sallie" Baines. They were the parents of two children, Ellis and Augusta. Sallie passed away in 1876.
In 1878 Samuel married Emma Louisa Hunt. Sam and Emma were the parents of 5 children.
