He retired from J.B. Hostetter & Sons True Value Hardware Store, Hershey, and formerly worked for Sears and the former Smith's Hardware Store, Hummelstown.
Ed Dillman, former manager at the Hershey store, had worked with him for 10 years at the now-closed store at the Derrytown Mall and said, 'He was a super, fine man.
'He was the 'key man,' the one who made the keys, and just an all-around versatile hardware fellow,' Dillman said.
'People coming in appreciated him because he wanted to help everybody. He was very knowledgeable and spent many, many years helping in the store.
'He was very smooth. He liked to play the organ,' Dillman said.
Allwein was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, an Army veteran of World War II and liked rose gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Mary J. Ferry Allwein; two sons, Donald E. of Columbus, Ohio, and William T. of Lebanon; three daughters, Romaine E. Kern, Marion L. Bleistine and Joan M. Fetter, all of Lebanon; two stepdaughters, Patricia Stoppi of Palmyra and Nancy Trombino of Cape May, N.J.; two brothers, Andrew A. of Lebanon and Theodore of Myerstown; 24 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10: 30 a.m. Friday in his church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lebanon.
Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Hoover Funeral Home and Crematory, Hershey, where the rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heart of the Parish Fund of his church, 359 W. Areba Ave., Hershey 17033.
