In 1957 he joined the U.S. Army and served as a medic for more than 22 years. His overseas assignments included Korea, Vietnam and Germany; and hospital assignments in the United States includesd Walter Reed Hospital and Fitszimmon Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo.
