James was born, lived, died, and buried in Lincoln Twp, Montgomery County, IA. He was in poor health for more than a year prior to his death, but died of a sudden heart attack. His funeral was in Center Ridge Presbyterian Church, next to the cemetery, where he and his wife were active members. The cemetery is on land donated for that purpose by the Aiken family (by his Aiken grandparents); it was part of their farm, the farm James farmed. He died in his home there.

James grew up on that farm. When he was 14 his father died. With the help of his mother and a hired hand, James carried on the farming operation.

On December 30, 1903 he married Sybil Claire Woods, daughter of Richard and Ada Woods.

He was survived also by a sister, Mrs. Marietta Woods of Macedonia, Iowa.
