T'ai P'ing Rebellion Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Able Seaman in the Royal Navy Naval Brigade. On October 9, 1862, Able Seaman Hinckley of the HMS Sphinx volunteered to go a shore during actions at Fung Wha, China. Under heavy continuous fire, he went to the rescue of the assistant master of the ship, then returned and carried a wounded army captain to safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Quartermaster.
