Bernard Ashley was a son of Abraham and Delilah Beeman Ashley of Chatham, New York.
He married 1st: Margaret Wynne in 1845; she died in 1852, preceded by a son Matthew born 1850, died 1851. Bernard married 2nd: Mary Daniels in 1853. Bernard and Mary became the parents of: Frank R. Ashley, Charles L. Ashley, Ernest Ashley and Jesse Ashley.

Resided Nassau New York, Enlisted August 12, 1862; mustered in as a corporal on September 25, 1862, in Co. A, 169th New York Infantry; promoted to sergeant but returned to ranks on unknown date; promoted to corporal on unknown date and mustered out on July 12, 1865, at McDougall Hospital, New York Harbor.
