Edward Lawrence Kunze, son of Thomas William and Sara Catherine Vest Powell, was born August 30, 1918, at Ensign, Kansas.
At the age of seven he was adopted by Lawrence Louis and Frankie Kunze.
After completing his elementary education at Alert and Enterprise grade schools, he chose his vocation as one to be dedicated to long hours of hard work.
He was united in marriage to Geneva Holman, August 6, 1938. Prior to World War II be was a semi-tractor driver, transporting gasoline and other commodities throughout the country.
He joined the U.S. Navy on May 31, 1944.
He received the Victory Medal for his service in the American, Asiatic and Pacific theatres of war.
He was honorably discharged January 22, 1946.
His love for the country prompted him and Geneva to choose a career in farming and ranching. They began by farming in the Green and Wakefield communities and have continued farming and ranching in the Scandia area for the past 14 years.
Ed's dedication to agriculture prompted him to work longer hours than the average person, but the extra effort did not go unrewarded because he was recognized as one of the more successful farmers in the area.
He was preceded in death by his mother. Frankie Olson Kunze and his step-mother, Elsie Mae Kunze. He died at the St. Joseph hospital on September 17, 1976 at the age of 58 years and 18 Days.
He is survived by his wife Geneva of the home, his father Lawrence and wife Vineta of Americus, two sisters, Mrs. Wilhelmina Mohr, Otis and Mrs. Josephine Sedberry, Pasadena, Tex. two brothers, Wayne of Morrison, Oklahoma, and Robert of Wichita, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral service was held in the Holmes Funeral Home, Riley, Monday, September 20, 1976 with pastor Arnold Wuertz officiating. Special music was by Ed Nord with Mrs. Gordon Webb, accompanist.
Casket bearers were Steven Await, Robert Lervold. Glenn Loring, Russell Nelson, Charley Robison and Charles Tuley.
Burial was in the Grandview Cemetery (Mill Creek Cemetery), Riley, Kansas.
