FIRST RAMSEY MAN KILLED IN ACTION
Capt. Torreano Dies in Africa of Wounds Received in Italy.

Ramsey - Word was received here yesterday of the death of Capt. Frank Torreano, son of Mrs. Victoria Bolli, who was wounded in action in Italy on November 7 and died in a field hospital in Africa, as a result. Capt. Torreano is the first Ramsay man to die in action and he was also the highest ranking officer from Ramsay. The deceased was born in Alabama on July 29, 1916 and attended the Ramsay school and the A. D. Johnston high school and took an active part in the ROTC. He graduated in 1935 and then entered Moorehead college, from which he graduated in 1939, and then taught school in Montgomery, Minn. He was a second lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve Corps. On August 18, 1941, he entered service and received his first training at Camp Clairbourne, La., and was a member of the first contingent to reach Ireland in January, 1942. He remained in Ireland for a year before being transferred to North Africa. He entered Italy with the first invasion troops. Captain Torreano participated in many major battles, including the Battle of Kassarine Pass, Hill 609, Bizerte,Foundouk, and the invasion of Sicily and Italy. He was in the infantry. He is survived by his wife, his mother, and two brothers, in the service, Aviation Cadet August, stationed at Indianapolis; and Ensign Peter Torreano, in radar training at Princeton University. Both brothers are graduates of the Michigan College of Mining and Techology at Houghton. Aviation Cadet August and the wife of the deceased, for former Ivey Ecklund, arrived Wednesday to be with Mrs. Bolli at this time. Torreano Rites Will Be Held Friday Morning

Ramsey - The remains of Capt. Frank Torreano, son of Mrs. Victoria Bolli, Ramsay, will arrive here for burial this week according to information received by the family from the war department. A military escort composed of members of the Frederickson-Torreano American Legion post of Bessemer township will meet the early morning train from Chicago, Thursday, March 10, and accompany the body to the Frick Funeral home in Bessemer where it will lie in state until time for burial Friday morning, March 11. Burial services will be conducted in the Church of Christ the King at Ramsay, at 9:30 Friday morning with the Rev. Fr. Andary officiating. Full military rites will be conducted by the Fredrickson-Torreano post assisted by the ROTC of Bessemer high school and the Veterans of Foreign War psot of Bessemer. Pall bearers will be Battista Conterio and James Conterio, Marcuisco; Emil Mascotti and William Hansen, Bessemer; and Joseph Savera and Alberta Pailrolero, Ramsay. Interment will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Bessemer...The death of Capt. Torreano was the first Ramsay fatality in the last world conflict, and he bore the distinction of having been the highest ranking officer in Bessemer township. Last year the American Legion post of Bessemer township, formerly called Fritz Fredrickson post, changed its name to the "Fredrickson-Torreano Post NO. 350" in honor of the first fatalites in World Wars I and II. Johnston High school, where he was a member of every organization in his class, including athletics and the ROTC which he headed as cadet captain. After high school graduation, he attended Moorehead college and graduated in 1939. He taught in Montgomery, Minn., and served in the capacity of second lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve corps. Capt. Torreano entered service in August 1941 and after training in Louisiana, was a member of the first contingent to sail to Ireland. He was in the North African campaign and then went on to Italy where he was killed in action. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, August and Peter, Ramsay, and a step sister, Mrs. Ed Hoeft, and a step brother, Louis, California. The funeral home will be open Thursday and Friday until burial servcies. The flags of Ramsay will be placed at half-mast Friday morning in honor of Capt. Torreano.
