Personal History
Page 6:

"Lewis Ansted, a merchant and farmer of Bedford, came there in 1864 with his parents, Jacob and Elizabeth (Welker) Ansted, on their removal from Washington township, Sandusky county, O, where he was born August 1, 1846. March 1, 1870, he was married to Marietta, daughter of Elisha and Harriet Amanda (Reynolds) Hayden. They have six children, five boys and one girl, the oldest of whom is seventeen, living with them on their hundred and twenty acre farm, and have lost two boys by death. In 1880 he opened a general store at Temperance, and on the establishment of a post office there, was appointed postmaster, which place he now fills. In politics he is a strong Prohibitionist, and in religion a member of the Free Methodist church, in which he has been trustee and treasurer for over eight years."

MICHIGAN PLACE NAMES By Romig PT.2 - Allen Co. Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana #977.4 R66m Pt.2 -
"Temperance, Monroe County : Lewis Ansted and his wife, Marietta Hayden Ansted (an ardent member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union) owned a 140 acre farm here in Bedford Township and on all deeds to the lots they sold was included the clause that no liquor was to be used, made or sold on the land; this provision was even assented to by the Ann Arbor Railroad when it obtained a right-of-way through the property; Mr. Ansted platted the village about 1884 and successfully petitioned for a post office named Temperance, of which he became the first postmaster on December 8, 1884; serving until 1890; the village is still dry {Hazel K.
