She was the paternal grandchild of Sylvanus/Silvanus Lawrence (ca. 1736-1831) and Jemima Dickerson (1747-1832) of Flanders, Morris Co, NJ; and gr-grandchild of Daniel Lorentz/Lawrence (ca. 1713-1796) and Elizabeth Drake (1716-1754) of Peapack, Somerset Co, NJ. Three of Johannes Lorentz's sons removed to North Carolina where they were patriarch's of the Lawrence family that settled in Rowan County. On her mother's side, Mary Ann, was the maternal grandchild of Henry Clark Doty (ca. 1754-1798) and Mary Lorain Loree of Medham, Morris Co, NJ.
Mary Ann was 21 years old when she married 20-year old Israel Swayze (b. 2/21/1803), son of Caleb Swayze & Elsie Kinney; a descendant of the Judge Samuel Swayze of Southold, Suffolk Co, Long Island who removed to Roxbury, Morris County in 1727. This line of Swayze's are descendants of John Swezey (1610-1706) of Dorsetshire, England who removed to Long Island about 1658, having originally settled in Salem, MA.
