Deceased Name: HARWICH - Virginia "Jinny" (Stidstone) Doane

Harwich town librarian for 42 years, died Saturday at her home after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Arthur Preston Doane Jr. for 58 years [married 06 June 1942].

Born in Winchester, she graduated from New York University in 1942. After graduation, she worked in advertising in New York City.

She was a summer resident of Harwich for many years before moving to Harwich with her husband in 1946.

After moving to the Cape, she became librarian at Brooks Free Library. Under her leadership, the library grew from a small, part-time operation to a renovated, state-of-the-art facility, and she was responsible for increasing the library's holdings tenfold. Her special interests in Cape Verdean and theater literature and memorabilia are reflected in the library's holdings.

Mrs. Doane was a co-founder of the Harwich Junior Theatre, where she served in the board of directors for many years and as its president and treasurer. She was a long-term member of the Harwich Park and Recreation Commission and a life member of the Harwich Historical Society. She served in the town's 275th and 300th anniversary celebration committees.

Her monograph, "Birth of a Building," the story of Harwich's Exchange Hall, was published in 1965. In 1969 she provided the research for the play "Branded Hands: A Habit of History," performed at the Harwich Junior Theatre as part of the town's 275th celebration. She was honored by the town of Harwich as the grand marshal of the Cranberry Festival in 1989.

As avid gardener, Mrs. Doane was certified as a master gardener by the Barnstable County Extension Service.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert W. Doane of Bridgewater; a daughter, Andrea E. Doane of Brookline; and four nieces.

She was also the mother of the late Arthur P. "Butch" Doane III.

Services are private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trustees of the Brooks Free Library, Main Street, Harwich, MA 02645; or to the Harwich Junior Theatre, P.O. Box 168, West Harwich, MA 02671.
