TWO PIONEERS OF COUNTY DROPPED DEAD THIS WEEK
Daughter Found Body of Andrew Dyer In Barn Last Wednesday
BOTH RESIDED NEAR HARTFORD
Death Came to Sterling Coleman as He Sat In Chair Holding His Grandchild.
Andrew Dyer, one of the oldest and best known farmers in this section, dropped dead of heart disease at his farm home four miles north of Hartford last Wednesday afternoon, his lifeless body being found in the barn by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Frank Beatty, on their return from Hartford at four o'clock.
During the morning hours Mr. Dyer complained of feeling ill, but at noon declared he felt better, and hitching up the horse insisted that the daughter should accompany her mother to Hartford, Mrs. Dyer being in feeble health and desiring to consult a physician. The daughter stopped enroute to the village and requested a neighbor to go to the home and remain with her father until their return.
At two o'clock Mr. Dyer declared that he was feeling all right and would go to the barn and take care of his stock, adding that it was unnecessary for his neighbor to remain longer.
From the position of the body when found by the daughter it was apparent that the aged farmer was sitting on a bundle of straw shelling corn when death overtook him. No evidences of a struggle were apparent and it is probable that death was instantaneous. The body was still warm when found, indicating that death had ensued but a few minutes before.
Mr. Dyer was 74 years of age and was the youngest of a quartet of brothers, all early pioneers of Hartford, whose combined ages reached a total of 316 years. The eldest, L. L. Dyer left Hartford several years ago and died at his home in California a year ago at the age of 84. The other two brothers are N. T. Dyer, aged 80, and A. J. Dyer, aged 76, both residents of this village.
Andrew Dyer was born at Rodney, N. Y., March 4, 1837, and came with his parents to Michigan in 1850, the family settling near Shafer lake, in Lawrence township. He had resided on various farms in this section for sixty-one years, having owned his present farm north of the village for the past five years.
In 1859 he was married to Miss Mandana McAllister of Lawrence, who died in 1863. {Correction: Married Maudaine E McCallaster Jan 1, 1860 in Lawrence, MI.} To them was born one son, Edward Dyer {Records state Edgar}, now a resident of Lawrence. Subsequently (Aug 20 1866) Mr. Dyer was married to Mrs. Phoebe Mitchell, who survives him. To the latter union three sons and two daughters were born. One son died some years ago, while W. A. Dyer of Detroit, Harry Dyer of Hartford, Mrs. Stella Beatty of California, and Mrs. Ada Stockwell of Hartford survive the father. Mrs. Beatty arrived here for a visit just a week before her father's death.
Funeral services for him were attended at the Stoughton's Corners church last Sunday, Rev. D. C. Henshaw officiating, and interment took place at the old cemetery on west Main street.
