Red headed, 4' 11" as an adult, Sarah Jane was born the Daughter of Levi and Malinda Jane Vandiver Ray Davis, born in Sacramento, McLean County, Kentucky before her parents migrated with Sarah Jane and brother William B to Reeds Creek area of Lawrence County, between Strawberry and Smithville.

Father Levi died in 1881 and Malinda Jane sometime after 1897. Any linkages or additional information about Sarah Jane's parents is appreciated.

Sarah Jane married first Thomas T. Winfrey in Taylor (Strawberry or Taylor Mill) Lawrence County, AR on 21 March 1889. Their first child William Allen Winfrey was born 19 Jan 1890. Their second child Theodore, born about 1892.

Sarah Jane was widowed or divorced prior to 1900, when she possibly married J.W. Clark in May 1897 living in Lynn, Lawrence County, AR.

What became of that marriage if indeed it was this Sarah Jane Davis Winfrey who married him is unclear as she married Thomas Holmes Hopkins, son of Thomas Allen and Martha Parsley Hopkins, on March 1, 1900 in Lawrence County, as Mrs. Sarah Jane Winfrey. Thomas Holmes and Sarah Jane set up their home in Scott Township, Sharp County near where Thomas's mother and grandparents had lived their lives off Reed's Creek and Shelbyville. Their son Thomas Lou "Earl" Hopkins was born the following year in 1901. Their daughter, Ivie Pearl Hopkins was born March 15, 1906 - 1908 near Lynn in Lawrence County, Arkansas, married a Ponds, with whom she had two daughters - Jeanne and Irene - and son Gary, all of Florida. She passed over on the 28 May 1978 near Kissimmee in Osceola County, FL.

Sarah Jane was widowed in Lawrence County, AR shortly after the 1910 census, when husband Thomas Holmes Hopkins died of pneumonia. For a while, Thomas and Sarah Jane raised their family on a riverboat on the Black River, hauling merchandise and logs between Black Rock and Newport. Thomas's burial site, likely to be Dry Creek Cemetery or Price Cemetery near Lynn, has never been confirmed. After his death, Sarah Jane rented a river house near the mouth of Strawberry and Black River, on the Lawrence County side, where she rented out rooms to workers from the nearby logging camp/ sawmill. Her life raising the children in the river bottoms was rough.

On December 23, 1913, over 3 years after Thomas Holmes Hopkins death, Sarah moved to Swifton in Jackson County, where she met and married Pearly Albert Mays. They apparently moved together to Osceola County, Florida were he died sometime after 1920.
